Country Population Comparison Game
Two flags, one question. Which country is bigger in people?
About Geo Population
Geo Population shows two countries with their flags and asks which one has more inhabitants. The names appear in your own language where your browser supports it. The choice looks simple until you try it with countries such as Vietnam and Egypt, or Germany and Thailand, whose populations are closer than they feel.
The pool has 40 countries, from India and China, with about 1.4 billion people each, to Iceland with about 380,000. On the first level the two populations differ by a factor of about 3.7 and on the last by only about 1.23. Populations are rounded and based on estimates around 2023.
How to play
- Look at the two countries and think about their number of inhabitants, not their area.
- Tap the country with more people, or press 1 or 2.
- After your answer, the note shows both populations in millions.
- The game only uses pairs that differ clearly, so the small differences between sources do not matter.
Two countries are shown. Pick the one with more people living in it. Figures are rounded and around 2023.
How scoring works
A right answer scores 100 and a wrong one 0, and in endless mode a right answer counts as a passed round. The difficulty depends on the ratio of the two populations: at least 3.7 on level 1 and at least 1.23 on level 10. The time limit is 9 seconds on level 1 and 7 seconds on level 10.
The populations are rounded values around 2023, in millions. Pairs with a ratio below the minimum are never used, so for example Germany (84 million) and Iran (89 million) do not appear together, but Germany and Spain (48 million) may.
What it trains
The game trains your knowledge of the world's population, which is useful for understanding economics, politics and the news. It also corrects some common errors: people often overestimate the populations of small, well-known countries and underestimate those of large, less visible ones.
It also gives practice in comparing quantities in a context. You can combine your knowledge of area, density and economic size to reach a good guess.
Tips for a higher score
- Learn the big ones: India and China with 1.4 billion each, then the United States with 335 million and Indonesia with 277 million.
- Remember that the number of people is not tied to area. Russia is the largest country by area, but has fewer people than Pakistan, Nigeria or Brazil.
- Use a ladder of round numbers: the United Kingdom, France and Italy have 60 to 70 million, Spain and Colombia about 50 million.
- Think of density. A country with big cities and fertile land, such as Bangladesh, can have many more people than it seems.
- If you are unsure, pick the country that you associate with more big cities.
The idea behind it
The world population passed 8 billion in November 2022 according to the United Nations, and in 2023 India overtook China as the most populous country. Population data are estimates based on censuses, registries and surveys, and different organisations such as the United Nations and the World Bank often differ by a few percent.
Surveys by the Gapminder Foundation have shown that many people hold outdated or inaccurate ideas about the state of the world, including how its population is distributed. The game is a small, playful way to test and update such ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Are the figures exact?
No. They are rounded estimates around 2023. The game never pairs countries that are so close that the differences between sources could matter.
Why are the country names in my language?
The names come from your browser's language support. If it is not available, the country code is shown.
